RCA Reston 2020 Survey of Community Concerns

This survey has been closed effective January 1, 2013.  We will follow up with an analysis of the results on the Reston 2020 blog and more detailed surveys into the areas identified in the results as being of priority concern.

Thank you for your interest and participation.

  1. I feel that the economy should be considered with each and every decision, on behalf of the Reston residents. Period.

  2. I feel that the current economy needs to be considered when raising our dues. We do not need anything NEW nor do we need to improve on our houses right now. We need to be able to hold onto our homes during these hard times. I feel like Reston is kicking me out because it is getting harder and harder to afford living here.

  3. You shouldn't take any lessons from a non-scientific web poll. You should seek to represent ALL of Reston's guiding principles, not just the ones with the top priorities.

With the multi-billion dollar Metro arriving in Reston, the issues of development and traffic flow must dominate the discussion, whether we want them to or not. Don't abandon the principles of Reston. Concentrate new development within walking distance of Metro. Keep ALL the established green space (don't trade green space for indoor facilities or carving more ball fields out of the woodlands.

    1. This web poll is very broad. You can not indicate specific major concerns. I agree with the problem of new development; keeping green space, keeping traffic flowing without the stop and go that we already have!

There are already plans to add too many new buildings that are not walking distance from Metro, and many will be using cars, adding to the already existing traffic backups on Reston Parkway and elsewhere. I really do not see how this keeps the principles of Reston.

  4. You make a good point, Anon above, even if guided by a truly scientific poll.

We do try to cover the bases, but there are a lot of bases to cover as you can see. Right now:
--Reston 2020 is covering development, environmental, and transportation issues--including the specific concerns you raise above.
--Sustainable Reston (another RCA committee) is addressing environmental issues
--RCA has put together an education committee which, to not second guess what our PTSA's are doing quite well, is looking as such issues as bringing a university to Reston, the possibility of establishing a technical school using hands-on teaching techniques in Reston, etc.
--RCA's Reston Accessiblity Committee (RAC) looks at issues confronting the handicapped, part of the diversity issue above. And we have a rep on Supr. Hudgins' "Reston for a Lifetime" effort focused on seniors, a key diversity issue.

We at RCA aren't now engaged in tax, cultural, recreation, or RA design/covenants issues. Maybe this survey will suggest we need to re-think our priorities.

And, of course, we'd welcome your help in any of these efforts!

  5. Sign Pollution

Sometime between 2009-2011 it seems like some bureaucrat from the county went through and became "sign czar", putting unnecessary signs up everywhere along roads, ball-fields, etc. Take a look around Sunrise Valley drive and South Lakes and the ball fields around Tarraset Elementary. 10 years ago, these roads and fields were pristine and a pleasure to be on. Someone obviously felt that we needed signs to tell us which side of the road to drive on, signs to tell us not to run over blind people, and signs to tell us not form groups of people and use fields without permission. We Restonians are smarter than that! None of these signs are necessary. Time for the laywers to take a break and let us live in peace. I feel like we need to have a "sign clearing week", as I doubt anyone ever looks to remove signs once they've been put up. Also, signs tend to get written on (on the back) by graffiti. The next time you're out and about in Reston, take a look around you. I think you'll find that most of the recent signs are just environmental noise.
