Community Outreach on New Draft Reston Comprehensive Plan Scheduled

For the last two years, Supervisor Alcorn has led a task force of mostly Reston community residents to revamp the Reston Comprehensive Plan.  The task force has approved a final draft plan and now the county and RCA are reaching out to the community for their input on the plan.

According to the Reston Patch, the following meetings are already lined up to review different aspects of the plan:

Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning has scheduled the following meetings where members of the public can learn more about the task force's recommendations and provide their feedback.

• Community Meeting - Transportation Focus: Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m. Virtual WebEx Meeting
• Community Meeting (Economic Development Focus) Thursday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. Virtual WebEx Meeting
• In-Person Community Meeting: Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate, 12125 Pinecrest Road.
• Lunch & Learn Friday, Sept. 23, at 12 p.m. Virtual WebEx Meeting
• Commissioner John Carter are scheduled to participate in the meeting about the comprehensive plan.
• In-Person Community Meeting: Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., in the second floor conference room at 1900 Reston Metro Plaza in Reston Station.
• Lunch & Learn: Wednesday, Sept. 28, 12 p.m. Virtual WebEx Meeting

Reston Citizens Association is also hosting a community meeting on Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m., at RA headquarters. Supervisor Alcorn and Hunter Mill District Planning Commissioner John Carter will be on hand to answer residents questions.

The Department of Planning and Zoning will be scheduling additional meetings in October. Members of the public can provide feedback via the county's online portal.

The full draft text of the plan is available on the County's website.  The webpage also provides everyone an opportunity to provide their comments on the draft plan.  The plan, more than 170 pages long, is divided into 12 sections covering topics of importance to the Reston community.

CPR calls for Community Meeting on County zoning moves

As RestonNow has reported, a recent letter from Fred Selden, Chief of the Fairfax County Planning and Zoning Department generally rejected proposed changes in the Reston Master Plan offered by CPR as well as those by RA. According to Selden, it is not the County’s “practice” to consider changes within five years of a Plan change.   CPR had proposed changes to the Master Plan that would eliminate the need for a zoning density increase.  The merits of CPR’s proposed changes were not considered, and the County apparently has reneged on its commitment to meet in small groups to discuss CPR’s specific proposals.

CPR will host a meeting at Reston Association headquarters on April 23 at 7PM to update the community on developments and review community input on Mr. Selden’s letter. CPR will distribute a survey for community input on the County’s current positions prior to the meeting.

Bruce Ramo of CPR said, “We are greatly disappointed that when asked recently about the community’s opposition to the zoning density increase, Supervisor Hudgins dismissed the opposition stating, ‘We are moving forward’.  It is evident that in the absence of leadership by the Supervisor, Restonians must step forward directly to convince the Board of Supervisors of the need for changes in the Master Plan.”

Leila Gordon, Director of the Reston Community Center, will make a presentation on RCC’s proposed Reston Recreation Center to be located at Baron Cameron Park.  Following her presentation, she will take questions and comments from the community as part of the ongoing RCC process to collect community feedback.  

Some key topics:

• What steps must be taken prior to a decision to build a recreation center?
• What is the need for a new recreation facility?
• What facilities and programs will the new recreation facility offer?
• How much will it cost and who will pay for it?
• Where should it be located?

All Restonians are invited and strongly encouraged to come and participate in this dialogue with RCC on this important potential asset for our community.

Reston Community Center solicits public input on a new indoor recreation center at Baron Cameron Park.

Reston Community Center invited the public to bring their wish lists to an open forum meeting on Monday, Feb. 11, to discuss the potential development of a new indoor recreation center at Baron Cameron Park. In 2012, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors transferred 68 acres at the park to the Fairfax County Parks Authority, and Bill Bouie, who is both a member of the Reston Community Center Board of Governors, as well as the chairman of the parks authority Board told the assembly that the Reston Community Center is “an interested party” in the Fairfax County Parks Authority’s Master Planning Process about to begin in March. “We are looking ahead to FY 2015’s budget, and in partnership with the FCPA our hope would be to develop an indoor facility on the site,” said Bouie, to a meeting room packed with individual residents, as well as plethora of local organizations, including the Reston Association, Reston Interfaith, Sustainable Reston, Reston Accessibility Committee, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the YMCA, Reston Runners and more. “Reston continues to grow and that growth means we need to respond and expand our recreational offerings.”  . .

Several attendees made pitches for additional venues for performing and cultural arts programs, whether at the Baron Cameron site or elsewhere, but the number one request was for a multi-use aquatic center to be the focal point of the potential new facility, featuring a 50 meter pool with “lots of lanes and a real diving well.”  . . .

MEETING: County Meeting on Crescent's Future Oct. 1, Reston Patch, September 17, 2012

What does the future hold for 16-acre apartment complex near Lake Anne Plaza?

Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins will host a community meeting Oct. 1 about proposals Fairfax County has received for future development at Crescent Apartments. . . .

Meeting time is 7 p.m. at Reston Community Center Lake Anne.

Crescent is a 1960s-era, 16-acre, 180-unit development across the street from Lake Anne Plaza.

The county guidelines to those submitting a proposal (to redevelop the apartments):

• Create a high quality development that complements the existing Lake Anne Community 
• Ensure diverse housing options exist in Lake Anne including workforce, senior and affordable housing 
• Enhance pedestrian, and bicycle connections throughout the Lake Anne area 
• Increase the viability of the Lake Anne Village Center by adding new residents

The redevelopment of the complex, which was acquired by the county in 2006 as part of an effort to add affordable housing units, is part of ongoing discussions for the redevelopment near Lake Anne. . . .
