The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday deferred a public hearing on the controversial 23-story mixed-use tower complex developers want to build on Reston Parkway.
The new date for the public hearing is Sept. 11 at 3:30 p.m. Items for hearing and action are often deferred at the request of a supervisor, as it was in this case (by Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins), developers or county staff.

The 418,000-square-foot building, which will replace the five-story "Reston Times" building at 1760 Reston Pkwy., was recommended for approval by the county planning commission in June, despite three planning commission members voting "no" and two abstaining.

Now it is time for the politicians, specifically Supervisor Hudgins, to negotiate with the developer in getting a building that is at least compliant with the existing zoning ordinance if not the new (or even old) Reston Master Plan planning principles and at least the recommendations of the RTF Town Center Sub-Committee. We would expect several proffers that would make the building more acceptable for the community, including much less density, a focus on residential development, and substantial proffers for open space (especially parks), education, road improvements, and so on.
The location is a perfect one to apply the thinking of the RTF to the development of North Town Center.
