Lake Thoreau Community 14 Comments

Since 1970, Lake Thoreau has been a vibrant and important watershed for the Reston community. It brings functional value as a storm-water management tool, enriches the environment, provides a habitat for wildlife, a recreational space for residents and a public arts venue, among many other valuable forms of enriching the community.

Since 2015, the lake has had various issues beginning with shallow coves in need of dredging to maintain the lakes storm-water management function, and even since that was addressed in 2018, the lake has experienced various blooms of algae issues and infestations of hydrilla.

The community has been patient allowing the Reston Association time to fix the issues and create a long term plan, but the community, after many attempts to become educated and informed, offering assistance and support and trying to engage in a two-way dialog with Reston Association staff, can no longer wait while we see our wildlife die, the lake develop into a dangerous place for the citizens and as we become increasingly concerned about it's long term health and mismanagement.

Join others in the community on our quest to return Lake Thoreau to a vibrant, thriving, functional and recreational community facility.

Ask the RA Board to immediately:

  • Appropriate funds to clean up the dying hydrilla from the lake this week
  • Setup a community meeting before the end of the month to address our additional concerns
  • Establish a public and transparent Working Group for Lake Thoreau
  • Take responsibility and hold people accountable for the mismanagement of this important community resource.
All RA members may help in this community initiative by signing the petition.  And please feel free to add your comments to others' on the petition.

CPR endorsements for 2020 RA Board of Directors Election

CPR Endorsements for Reston Association
2020 Board of Directors Election

 March 2-April 3

The Reston Association Board of Directors election will bring new voices to the Board—voices that will have a significant say in the upcoming review of the Reston Master Plan that was recently announced by Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn. The future growth of Reston will be forever impacted by the review, particularly in the PRC, the established residential neighborhoods outside of the Transit Station Areas.

CPR is dedicated to support growth that welcomes new neighbors to a future Reston that maintains the values of our unique planned community: environmental stewardship, architectural excellence, and diversity. In that spirit, CPR endorses two candidates who we believe will best promote those values in the most financially transparent and responsible ways:

Bob Petrine   Candidate for 3 Year At Large Seat

Bob brings extensive community and financial experience so needed by the RA. He will “hit the ground running” as an RA Director as he is completely well versed in the RA’s governance and financial processes, and has been a leader in the community’s efforts to hold the RA and County government accountable to Reston residents. You can learn more about Bob at: https://www.facebook.com/Vote4BobPetrine/.

Sarah Selvaraj-Dsouza   Candidate for 1 Year At Large Seat

Sarah brings the experience and insights of a small business owner. She understands the challenges of setting and working within a reasonable budget, and the needs for RA to be accountable and transparent in its financial and other activities. Sarah is an advocate for preserving Reston’s open spaces and for rational development.  You can learn more about Sarah at: https://www.sarah4reston.com/.

Help maintain Reston as a welcoming and diverse community - vote for Bob and Sarah!

Vote in the RA Board of Directors Election, March 2-April 3

Re-post from the Coalition for a Planned Reston (CPR) website.

Vote in the Reston Association
2020 Board of Directors Election
March 2-April 3

The upcoming Reston Association 2020 Board of Directors election is critical for the independence and financial well-being of Reston as a planned community. CPR urges all Restonians to vote, online or by mail, beginning on March 2 and ending on April 3.

Your vote is necessary to elect candidates who are highly knowledgeable of and actively engaged in critical land use issues facing Reston. These include:
  • Keeping RA property as RA property (not transferring our parks and recreational areas to Fairfax County)
  • Maintaining the current density cap, and
  • Retaining two 18-hole golf courses as essential open space.
Reston Association will be an important participant in the upcoming Reston Comprehensive Plan Task Force announced by Supervisor Alcorn. We need RA Board members who are committed to growing Reston as a welcoming, planned community and maintaining fiscal transparency.

CPR suggests that you listen to the candidate’s statements:
RA Board of Directors Election Video, and attend or watch the Candidates’ Forum at Reston Association headquarters on February 26 at 6:30 p.m.

CPR/RA Letter to County Staff: The Road from Nowhere, August 17, 2018

August 17, 2018

Dear Tom (Biesiadny, Chief, FCDOT):

Trust all is well your way.

In several of our recent meetings the "Road from Nowhere" has come up.  We have asked who decided to draw the road on a map buried in the appendix of the then draft Master Plan, why this wasn't presented to the community and justified before it was added, and how such a road could be proposed that impinges on designated open space.  We haven't yet gotten answers to any of these questions, but we have been told this is just a "conceptual" road and thus we shouldn't worry about it.

It would be helpful, however, to understand exactly what this "concept" would look like in reality.  If you or your staff could provide the following information it would be most appreciated.

Is this conceived as a two lane or four lane road?

What is the distance between the edges of either road, including curbs, gutters, set backs, bike paths and a sidewalk on at least one side?

How will the road compensate for the large discrepancy between the level of the ground along the conceptual road and level of the road at American Dream Way?

Who owns all the land the road will traverse?

Why is the County unable to identify who drew the road on the map in the first place?  Is it common for the County to be unable to say how or why official documents are drafted and approved?

An alternative to all of the above would be to simply remove the Road from Nowhere from all maps and planning documents.  Easier and better for everyone.

Very best regards,  Dennis
