As if you needed any further validation of your sense that Washington traffic congestion is bad, GPS device maker TomTom has come out with its global look at traffic congestion based on anonymous data from TomTom GPS users. What it shows it that the Washington area is the fifth worst metropolitan area in the United States (behind Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and San Jose) with congestion conditions adding 27% to driving time in the region overall. More specifically, congestion is increasing morning rush hour driving times by 49% and evening rush hour commutes by 66%. The delay adds 35 minutes per hour to peak period driving and 84 hours annually to peak period driving in the region. And, according to TomTom, Washington conditions are getting worse.
Here's the link to the several continental reports covering more than 130 major cities worldwide.
